Decide whether to include inactive records
Leave “Only Active Corporations” unchecked when checking an old invoice, dissolved company, merger, reinstatement or former name.
Compare every plausible result
Review name, charter number, entity type, status and registration details. A matching brand name alone is not enough.

Understand Missouri Status Labels Before Acting
Read the exact wording in the live profile and open later filings. Older, dissolved or revoked records can remain searchable and may still be important for historical verification.
Registry obligations appear current
Use the record for identity and filing research, but separately verify licences, tax needs, insurance and authority of the person contacting you.
A domestic corporation failed to resolve required obligations
Common grounds include missing reports, franchise-tax issues or failure to maintain a registered agent or office. Check for later reinstatement.
A foreign corporation’s Missouri authority was revoked

What Missouri generally checks for good standing
For a corporation, the SOS explains that required annual reports must be filed, applicable franchise-tax requirements must be met and a proper registered agent or office must be maintained. Other entity types have comparable entity-specific requirements.

Missouri Annual and Biennial Registration Reports
The most important Missouri-specific rule is that LLCs do not file the corporation-style annual registration report. Corporations and some other registered structures follow different recurring requirements.

Corporation due-date rule
For corporations incorporated or qualified on or after July 1, 2003, the report is generally due by the end of the month in which the corporation was incorporated or qualified. Older corporations use the month shown on the prior report. Missouri says the assigned month cannot simply be changed.
Annual versus biennial election
An eligible corporation can choose a biennial report when the portal permits it. Missouri notes that an error message means the entity is not eligible that year; the corporation should file the annual report and consider the biennial option in a later eligible year.
Late-report consequences
- Late reports can add $15 for each 30-day period.
- Failure to file can lead to administrative dissolution for a domestic corporation.
- A foreign corporation’s Missouri authority can be revoked.
- A registered agent’s failure to forward a reminder does not excuse the corporation.

Find, Register or Renew a Missouri Fictitious Name
Missouri uses “fictitious name” for a DBA—any name under which a person or business operates that differs from the true legal name.

A renewal can be filed only during the six months before expiration. An expired record requires a new registration and new charter number.

How the online fictitious-name filing is organised
The official portal guide shows this order: choose Register Fictitious Name, enter the proposed name and physical business address, add each owner, review the filing, collect all required signatures, add the $7 filing to the cart and save the receipt after payment.
What can be amended?
The business address and an owner’s address can be changed at renewal or through an amendment. A recently filed typo or transposed number may be corrected. To change the fictitious name itself or ownership, cancel the existing record and file a new registration.
After identifying the correct owner information and renewal status, use the official portal or Corp. 56 form.
Check and Reserve a Missouri Business Name
A name-availability search is preliminary. A reservation temporarily holds an available name, while formation creates the entity and a fictitious-name filing records a DBA.

- The entity must maintain an eligible registered agent.
- The registered office must be a physical Missouri street address.
