Find and Verify a Maryland Business Record
Search a Maryland LLC, corporation, partnership or trade name by business name or Department ID, then use the record’s three tabs to verify status, good standing, resident agent, filing history and annual-report compliance.
This guide explains the Maryland-specific details the search screen does not teach: SDAT versus Secretary of State, Active versus Good Standing, forfeiture recovery, Form 1, personal-property rules and document ordering.
The Maryland “SOS search” is actually an SDAT search
Maryland business entities are maintained by the State Department of Assessments and Taxation. The Secretary of State handles other functions, including certain charities and nonprofit matters, but it is not the ordinary LLC and corporation registry.
Choose the Shortest Useful Path
Select what you need. The helper tells you which record tab to use and what conclusion you should avoid.
Find an LLC or corporation
- Search the distinctive part of the business name.
- Match the Department ID and business type.
- Open General Information and check Active plus Good Standing.
- Review Filing History and Annual Report/Personal Property.
Complete the Maryland Business Entity Search
The public portal’s dependable search choices are Business Name and Department ID. A Department ID is Maryland’s entity-record number; it is not the federal EIN.
Start with the business name
Enter all or part of the legal or advertised name. Begin with distinctive words and omit LLC, Inc., punctuation or generic wording when an exact search produces no useful result.
Use Department ID for one exact record
Use the letter-and-number Department ID from an SDAT filing, annual report, certificate, official notice or earlier search result. Do not enter an EIN in this field.
Compare similar names
Match the complete name, business type, Department ID and status. Similar names can belong to unrelated entities, and a trade name may be owned by a differently named legal entity.
Open General Information
Check whether the record is Active, whether a legal entity is in Good Standing, its principal office and its resident agent.
Open Filing History
Review formation, amendments, resident-agent changes, mergers, dissolution, revival and actions entered by other Maryland agencies.
Open Annual Report/Personal Property
Check each assessment year, Date Filed, extension status, Penalty Amount and Date Penalty Paid. A blank Date Filed beside a required year is a practical warning that the report may be missing.
After learning the search order above, use the official public portal.
Use All Three Tabs—Not Just the Name Result
Maryland separates identity, filing history and annual compliance. A useful verification requires all three.
General Information
Use this to identify the entity, Department ID, type, Active/Inactive status, Good Standing status, principal office and resident agent.
Filing History
Use this to understand formation, amendments, agent changes, forfeiture, revival, merger, dissolution and holds or actions entered by another agency.
Annual Report/Personal Property
Use this to identify missing report years, extensions, late penalties and whether a displayed penalty has been paid.
| Record item | What it tells you | What it does not prove | Next check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business name | The name recorded with SDAT. | That every brand, invoice or website uses the same name. | Search trade names and compare contracts. |
| Department ID | The unique Maryland record identifier. | It is not an EIN or Comptroller tax-account number. | Save it for precise searches, filings and support. |
| Business type | LLC, corporation, LP, LLP, sole proprietorship, general partnership, trade name or another record type. | That the business holds every required licence. | Use the appropriate licensing board or local clerk. |
| Business status | Whether the record is Active, Inactive, Forfeited, Dissolved, Merged or another displayed condition. | Good Standing by itself. | Read the separate Good Standing field and Filing History. |
| Good Standing | Whether a legal entity has satisfied the SDAT criteria reflected at that time. | Financial health, insurance, reputation or every licence. | Review missing reports, penalties, agent and agency holds. |
| Principal office | The main office address reported to SDAT. | That it is open to customers or is the payment address. | Compare the latest filing and contract. |
| Resident agent | Who consented to receive service of process for the entity. | Ownership or management control. | Review officers, members, managers and filed documents. |
| Date accepted/formed | The relevant filing or registration date shown by SDAT. | Continuous operation since that date. | Look for forfeiture, revival, merger or dissolution. |
| Filing document | What was submitted or recorded and when. | That every private ownership or contract change was filed. | Order a certified copy if formal proof is required. |
Verify a Maryland Company Before You Pay or Sign
The search helps confirm the legal identity behind a proposal, invoice, lease, donation request or service agreement. It is not a complete fraud or licence check.
Match these items
- Legal entity name on the agreement
- Department ID
- Business type
- Active status
- Good Standing for a legal entity
- Principal office or documented business address
- Trade-name owner when a brand is used
- Newest filing and annual-report year
Do not assume this
- The resident agent owns the company
- The person contacting you is authorised
- The requested bank account belongs to the entity
- The company is insured
- The company holds a professional licence
- The business has no lawsuits, liens or complaints
- Good Standing means financially healthy
- An EIN is publicly verified by this search
Worked example: the invoice uses a trade name
“Bay Home Solutions” appears as the payee.
No exact LLC or corporation matches that phrase.
The filing identifies “BHS Renovations LLC” as the owner.
Search BHS Renovations LLC, verify standing, then check the relevant contractor licence.
Active, Good Standing and Forfeited Are Different
Maryland displays business status and Good Standing separately. Legal entities such as corporations and LLCs can be in Good Standing; sole proprietorships and general partnerships are described as Active or Inactive instead.
| What the record shows | Practical meaning | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Active + Good Standing | The legal entity is active and has met the SDAT criteria reflected by the certificate/status system. | Verify identity, newest filings and separate licences. |
| Active + Not in Good Standing | The entity has not yet been forfeited but has one or more compliance problems. | Missing reports, penalties, agent, principal office, dishonoured payments or agency holds. |
| Inactive | The record is no longer active under the displayed business type or filing history. | Read Filing History for cancellation, expiration or another terminating event. |
| Forfeited | The legal entity lost its active status after unresolved compliance issues. | Complete the revival, reinstatement, requalification or re-registration path. |
| Dissolved or Cancelled | The entity or registration was ended through a filing or legal process. | Look for a later revival or reinstatement before relying on current authority. |
| Merged | The original record became part of a merger. | Open the merger document and identify the surviving entity. |
| No active resident agent/principal office | A required legal-entity record component is missing or inactive. | A paper Resolution may be required to correct the record. |
Maryland’s Good Standing repair order
- Check each annual-report year. In the Annual Report/Personal Property tab, identify blank Date Filed entries for required years.
- Pay unpaid penalties. A Penalty Amount with no Date Penalty Paid indicates an unpaid displayed penalty. Older debts referred to the Central Collection Unit must be paid there.
- Confirm an active resident agent and principal office. A legal entity displaying no active agent or office may need a paper Resolution.
- Resolve Comptroller or Labor holds. Filing History can show an agency instruction such as not to revive without clearance.
- Resolve a dishonoured payment. A rejected check or payment can block standing until the amount and returned-payment fee are resolved.
- Collect required clearances. A business that has reported personal property may need a county Tax Clearance Certificate. A foreign entity generally needs a home-state Certificate of Good Standing no older than 60 days.
- File the correct restoration document. Domestic corporation: Articles of Revival. Domestic LLC: Articles of Reinstatement. Foreign corporation: requalification. Foreign LLC: re-registration.
No Result? Use This Maryland Search-Recovery Order
A missing exact match can mean the search wording is too narrow, the advertised name is a trade name or the business operates under a structure you did not expect.
Understand Maryland Form 1 and Personal Property
Maryland combines annual entity reporting with business personal-property questions. Every legal entity generally files an Annual Report each year starting the year after creation, even when it had no revenue, had not started operating or had only one employee.
2026 due date and extension
The 2026 filing deadline was April 15, 2026. An approved online 60-day extension moved the deadline to June 15, 2026. The extension request is seasonal and closes after the request period.
| Business type | 2026 Form 1 fee | Useful note |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic or foreign LLC | $300 | Department ID prefixes commonly include W for domestic and Z for foreign LLC records. |
| Domestic or foreign stock corporation | $300 | A corporation’s report remains due even with no business activity. |
| Limited partnership, LLP, statutory trust or REIT | $300 | Use the entity type displayed in the search to choose the correct Form 1 category. |
| Domestic or foreign nonstock corporation | $0 | A no-fee report can still be required. |
| Foreign interstate corporation | $0 | Confirm the exact business type shown by SDAT. |
| SDAT Certified Family Farm | $100 | Certification status controls this fee category. |
When the Personal Property Tax Return section is required
For filing years 2023 and later, an LLC or corporation generally must complete the personal-property portion when it owns, leases or uses personal property in Maryland—excluding licensed vehicles—with a total original cost of $20,000 or more.
Complete the property schedules when
- Maryland personal property has original cost of $20,000 or more
- The entity disposed, sold or transferred property that must be reported
- The business previously reported property or received an assessment and must document disposal
- The online questions determine a return is required
Do not make these mistakes
- Using current market value instead of original cost
- Counting licensed vehicles in the $20,000 test
- Skipping the initial/signature attestation
- Assuming “no revenue” removes the Annual Report duty
- Emailing or faxing Form 1
Posted processing expectations
For a non-forfeited entity after receipt of an annual report.
For minimal property and a business that has filed online before.
Assessment may take substantially longer.
After determining the required report and property schedules, use the official filing service or current forms.
Find or Register a Maryland Trade Name
A Maryland trade name is the name under which a person or legal entity does business when it differs from the owner’s legal name. It does not create a new LLC or corporation.
| Trade-name fact | Maryland rule | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Regular filing fee | $25 | Confirm current online service charges before checkout. |
| Effective period | Five years from SDAT acceptance | Renew during the final six months to avoid forfeiture of the trade name. |
| If not renewed | The trade name is forfeited and a new application is required | Do not assume an old trade-name record remains usable. |
| Owner eligibility for renewal | An associated legal entity must be Active | A forfeited entity must be reinstated before association with a renewal. |
| Name rights | SDAT acceptance does not create greater rights to use the name | Search trademarks and other legal conflicts separately. |
Check and Reserve a Maryland Business Name
A search is a preliminary conflict check. SDAT makes the filing decision, and acceptance does not create trademark rights.
Search these variations
- Full proposed name
- Distinctive words without LLC or Inc.
- Singular, plural and common spelling variations
- Names with different spacing or punctuation
- Trade names using the same brand wording
- Federal and Maryland trademark records
Do not conclude this
- No exact match guarantees acceptance
- Name reservation creates the entity
- Trade-name filing creates exclusivity
- A domain purchase creates legal rights
- SDAT acceptance clears federal trademarks
Corporate name reservation
Maryland’s Corporate Name Reservation Application reserves an available entity name for an exclusive 30-day period. The filing fee is $25; the form lists an optional $20 expedited-service fee.
View Filings or Order the Right Certificate
Most business documents filed after August 2001 can be viewed free through the entity search. Use a paid certificate or certified copy only when a bank, court, agency or transaction requires official proof.
Search the business
Use business name or Department ID and open the correct record.
Open Filing History
Locate the formation, amendment, annual report, merger, dissolution or revival document you need.
Check the document icon
An eye icon indicates an online document is available. A crossed-out eye means it cannot be ordered through that online action.
Choose the proof level
Use a free view for research, a copy for ordinary records, a certified copy for authenticated filing content or a Certificate of Status for Good Standing proof.
| Your need | Best document | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Read the public record | Entity profile and free available filing image | Not an officially certified copy. |
| Prove a filing’s contents | Certified copy | Order the exact filing requested. |
| Prove current Good Standing | Certificate of Status | Resolve Not in Good Standing issues before purchasing. |
| Verify an online certificate | Official certificate-authentication service | Use the validation information printed on the certificate. |
Change, Reinstate or Requalify the Correct Record
Do not file an annual report as a substitute for every change. Use the form or online action that matches the event.
Principal office change
Report a new main-office address using the designated SDAT change process.
Resident agent change
Obtain the new agent’s consent and update the agent or address using the correct filing.
Domestic corporation
After resolving reports, penalties, holds and clearances, use Articles of Revival.
Domestic LLC
After resolving all underlying problems, use Articles of Reinstatement.
Foreign corporation
Use the requalification path and attach a recent home-state Good Standing certificate when required.
Foreign LLC
Use re-registration and supply the required home-state evidence.
After identifying the exact change or restoration path, use Maryland Business Express or the applicable SDAT form.
Use the Correct Maryland Government Tool
The entity search answers registration and filing questions. Other agencies answer tax, licence, UCC and charity questions.

Maryland Business Search FAQs
Does the Maryland Secretary of State maintain the LLC search?
No. Maryland’s ordinary LLC, corporation and business-entity records are maintained by the State Department of Assessments and Taxation through Maryland Business Express. The Secretary of State handles other functions, including certain charity matters.
Is the Maryland business entity search free?
Yes. Searching public entity information and viewing many available filings is free. Fees apply to registrations, annual reports, certified copies, Certificates of Status and other paid transactions.
What is a Maryland Department ID?
It is the identifying number assigned to the Maryland business record. It is not the federal Employer Identification Number and is not the same as a Comptroller tax-account number.
What is the difference between Active and Good Standing?
Active describes the business record’s operating status. Good Standing is a separate compliance field for legal entities such as LLCs and corporations. A business can be Active but Not in Good Standing when reports, penalties, agent information, payments or agency holds remain unresolved.
Why is a Maryland business Not in Good Standing?
Common reasons include missing annual reports or personal-property returns, unpaid penalties, a missing active resident agent or principal office, a Comptroller or Labor hold, or a dishonoured payment.
What does Forfeited mean for a Maryland LLC?
Forfeited means the legal entity lost active status after unresolved compliance problems. A domestic LLC generally must resolve missing reports, penalties, holds, agent or clearance issues and then file Articles of Reinstatement.
When is the Maryland annual report due?
The standard annual filing deadline is April 15. The first report is due in the year after the business is created, even if it had no revenue, had not started operations or had one employee.
When must a Maryland business file the personal-property return section?
For filing years 2023 and later, an LLC or corporation generally completes it when the business owns, leases or uses Maryland personal property, excluding licensed vehicles, with total original cost of $20,000 or more. Disposal and prior-assessment circumstances can also require additional schedules.
How long does a Maryland trade name last?
An accepted Maryland trade name is effective for five years. It can be renewed during the final six months. If not renewed, SDAT forfeits the trade name and a new application is required.
How do I obtain a Maryland Certificate of Status?
Search and confirm the entity, resolve any Not in Good Standing issues, then order the certificate through Maryland Business Express. Certificates are not available for every record type, including sole proprietorships, general partnerships and trade names.
Freshness note: fees, filing interfaces, deadlines and processing times can change. This guide uses Maryland SDAT and Maryland Business Express information available in July 2026. Verify the final amount, status and available action on the linked official page before submitting a filing or payment.
