Find and Verify a Colorado Business Record
Search a Colorado LLC, corporation, nonprofit, partnership or foreign entity, then verify the legal name, 11-digit ID, status, report month, jurisdiction, offices, registered agent and filing history.
This guide also explains advanced searches, trade names, name availability, Periodic Reports, delinquency recovery, free certificates of good standing and record-protection tools.
What Do You Need From the Colorado Business Database?
Select your goal. The helper gives the shortest safe path before you open an official filing or payment page.
Find a company
- Search the distinctive words in the legal name.
- Compare the 11-digit ID, form and status.
- Open the correct Summary page.
- Review filing history and the newest Periodic Report.
Complete a CO SOS Business Search Step by Step
The standard search accepts a business, trademark or trade name, an 11-digit entity ID or a document number. Use less wording first, then verify the correct record.
Choose the information you trust
Use the legal or advertised name when starting from a contract, invoice or website. Use the 11-digit Colorado ID when it appears on a filing, certificate or prior summary page.
Enter distinctive name words
For “Front Range Property Management Solutions, LLC,” begin with “Front Range Property.” Remove LLC, punctuation and generic endings if the result list is empty.
Compare matching records
Do not select the first similar name automatically. Compare the ID number, record type, status and formation date.
Open the ID number
The ID link opens the Summary page. Searching by the exact 11-digit ID normally takes you directly to that record.
Confirm the entity identity
Match the legal name, form, jurisdiction and formation date. A foreign entity can have a principal office outside Colorado while maintaining a Colorado registered agent.
Read the status and report month
Good Standing, Noncompliant and Delinquent have different consequences. The Periodic report month controls the annual filing window.
Open filing history and documents
Review the newest Periodic Report, formation document, statement of change, trade-name filing, dissolution or delinquency cure before relying on the summary alone.
After choosing the correct search wording and verification order, use the official Business Database Search.
Use Advanced Search When the Basic Search Is Not Enough
Advanced Search can separate an entity name from a trade name, trademark, registered agent, reserved-name holder or registrant. It can also restrict results by filing dates.
| Search target | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Locate corporations, LLCs and other business records. | A storefront or brand may instead be a trade name. |
| Trade name | Connect a DBA or assumed name to its registrant. | Trade names do not have to be unique. |
| Trademark | Search Colorado state trademark records. | This is not a complete federal trademark clearance search. |
| Registered agent | Find records linked to an individual or entity serving as agent. | The agent is not automatically an owner. |
| Reserved-name holder | Identify who holds a current entity-name reservation. | A reservation does not create a business. |
| Trade-name registrant | Find trade names connected to a person or organisation. | Common names can produce unrelated records. |
| Filing date range | Research records filed during a known period. | The filing date is not always the same as an effective date. |
Use Advanced Search only after deciding which record type or person-role relationship you need.

Colorado Business Status Meanings and Next Actions
| Status | Practical meaning | If you are checking the company | If it is your record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Standing | The entity is current on required SOS information and reports. | Continue with licence, identity and transaction checks. | Maintain the agent and file the next Periodic Report on time. |
| Noncompliant | A required report or registered-agent issue remains unresolved after the normal deadline. | Review the History and Documents page for the missed requirement. | File the available late report or correct the agent issue before delinquency. |
| Delinquent | The noncompliance period expired without correction. | Do not rely on Good Standing; ask for proof of a completed cure. | File a Statement Curing Delinquency; the current fee is $100. |
| Voluntarily Dissolved | The entity filed a voluntary dissolution. | Check whether it was later reinstated or another entity succeeded it. | Use the available reinstatement option if legally appropriate. |
| Administratively Dissolved | An older or applicable record was dissolved through an administrative process. | Read the dissolution date and later filings. | Review reinstatement forms and professional advice. |
| Withdrawn / Authority Terminated | A foreign entity ended or lost its authority in Colorado. | Check for a later requalification or new foreign record. | Requalify the old record or file new foreign authority as appropriate. |
| Merged / Converted | The original record may no longer be the surviving or current entity form. | Open the merger or conversion document and follow the resulting entity. | Use the surviving or converted record for current filings. |
Calculate the Colorado Periodic Report Window
Reporting entities file electronically every year. The Summary page shows the Periodic report month. The report can be filed two months before that month and two months after it without the $50 late penalty.
January report month
Filing window: November 1 through March 31. If still missing, the entity becomes Noncompliant; a late report is generally due by May 31 before Delinquent status.
July report month
Filing window: May 1 through September 30. Use the Summary page, not the formation anniversary alone.
December report month
Filing window: October 1 through the last day of February in the following year.
| Filing | Current online fee | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Periodic Report | $25 | Annual electronic report during the available window. |
| Late filing penalty | $50 | Added when the filing is late under the state schedule. |
| Statement Curing Delinquency | $100 | Used to return a Delinquent entity toward Good Standing. |
File the report from the entity record
- Search the name or 11-digit ID.
- Open the correct Summary page.
- Select File a form.
- Choose File a Periodic Report when available.
- Update principal-office and registered-agent information as needed.
- Review the filing carefully.
- Continue through payment until the Receipt page appears.
Use the official report guidance after confirming the report month and status above.
No Colorado Business Result? Use This Recovery Order
Find a Colorado Trade Name or DBA
Colorado calls a DBA an assumed or trade name. A for-profit entity using a name other than its true name—and an individual using a business name other than the person’s legal first and last name—may be required to file a trade name.
Who can file a trade name
- Individual or sole proprietor
- General partnership or other non-reporting entity
- Estate, trust, state or other jurisdiction
- Corporation, LLC or other reporting entity
- Domestic limited partnership
- Delinquent, dissolved or converted entity where permitted
What a trade name does not do
- It does not create a new legal entity.
- It cannot be converted into an LLC.
- It does not have to be unique.
- It cannot be reserved through an entity-name reservation.
- It does not prove federal trademark rights.
- It does not replace required licences.
How long a trade name remains effective
A trade name tied to a reporting entity generally remains effective while the entity is in Good Standing or Noncompliant status. If the entity becomes Delinquent or Dissolved, the trade name normally remains effective for one year; a cure or reinstatement during that period can continue it. Expired trade names cannot be renewed—a new Statement of Trade Name must be filed.
After identifying whether you need the trade name itself or its registrant, use the official database and renewal service.
Check Colorado Business Name Availability Properly
Search these variations
- Full proposed name
- Distinctive words without designator
- Singular and plural forms
- Abbreviations and spacing differences
- Similar sounding names
- Trade names using the same brand
- Federal and state trademarks
Do not assume
- An empty search guarantees acceptance.
- LLC and Limited Liability Company are treated identically for uniqueness.
- A reserved name starts the business.
- A trade name can be reserved.
- State acceptance creates trademark rights.
- A domain purchase proves legal availability.
120-day renewable name reservation
A Colorado entity name reservation is effective for 120 days and can be renewed. The current online fee for a reservation, renewal or transfer is $25. Include the appropriate entity designator because terms such as LLC, L.L.C. and Limited Liability Company can affect distinguishability.
Use the official availability search only after checking the broader conflicts above.
Verify the Colorado Registered Agent Correctly
A registered agent receives service of process, legal documents and state notices. The agent can be an owner, but the role itself does not prove ownership.
Individual agent
Must be at least 18 and have a Colorado residence or usual place of business. Since July 1, 2025, residency must be verified through Colorado ID information or the alternate passcode process.
Entity agent
Must be registered with the Colorado SOS, be in Good Standing and have a usual place of business in Colorado.
Physical location
The usual place of business must be a Colorado physical street location customarily open during normal business hours. A P.O. box cannot serve as the physical registered-agent address.
- Only one individual or entity can be appointed as registered agent.
- The agent must consent to the appointment.
- The Colorado Secretary of State cannot be appointed.
- An alternate agent passcode expires 45 days after request.
- Failure to maintain an agent can lead to Noncompliant and Delinquent status.
Get the Correct Colorado Certificate or Filing Copy
| Need | Best document | Cost signal | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show SOS compliance status | Certificate of Good Standing | Free online | Bank, lender, contract or another requester asking for current SOS standing. |
| Read a public filing | Document PDF from filing history | Public viewing available | Review formation, Periodic Report, amendment, trade name or status filing. |
| Prove a filing copy is certified | Certified copy | Free online under current fee schedule | Formal evidence of the document held by the SOS. |
| Verify a certificate received from someone | Certificate validation | Online service | Confirm that a certificate number is valid. |
Use the official certificate search after confirming the exact entity and document need.
Protect a Colorado Business Record From Unauthorised Changes
Colorado business records are public, but owners can add optional filing protection and monitoring.
Secure Business Filing
Adds optional email-and-password protection so filings cannot be submitted without the correct credentials. The service is free.
Email and text alerts
Anyone with an interest in a specific entity can subscribe for filing, status, Periodic Report and renewal notices.
Regular document review
Open filing history after every alert and compare the filer, addresses, agent and effective date with authorised changes.
Secure Business Filing activation
Protection can be set up during formation or later. When it is added after formation, the state can mail an activation PIN to the principal office street address. This helps prevent a person from “hijacking” a record by curing delinquency and changing the name, office or agent.
If a filing appears fraudulent
- Download the suspicious document from filing history.
- Save evidence showing why the filing was unauthorised.
- Use the SOS fraudulent-filing complaint process.
- Contact local law enforcement immediately for identity theft, theft or an active scam.
- Consider the Colorado Attorney General consumer complaint path.

Final Colorado Entity Verification Checklist
CO SOS Business Search FAQs
Is the Colorado business entity search free?
Yes. Searching the public database, viewing available filings and generating an online Certificate of Good Standing are free. Filing forms such as a Periodic Report, name reservation or delinquency cure requires the applicable fee.
What is the 11-digit Colorado entity ID?
It is the identifier assigned by the Colorado Secretary of State. It is not a federal EIN, Colorado tax-account number or professional licence number.
What does Good Standing mean in Colorado?
It generally means the entity has maintained required SOS information and filed required Periodic Reports. It is not a licence, tax-clearance certificate, insurance verification or state endorsement.
Why does a Colorado business show Noncompliant?
A required Periodic Report or registered-agent issue was not corrected by the normal deadline. The entity has a limited period to file the available late document before becoming Delinquent.
When is a Colorado Periodic Report due?
The Summary page shows a Periodic report month. The report can generally be filed during a five-month window: two months before that month, the report month and two months after it without a late penalty.
How much is a Colorado Periodic Report?
The current online fee is $25. The current late filing penalty is $50, and a Statement Curing Delinquency is $100. Verify the official fee schedule before payment.
Can two Colorado businesses use the same trade name?
Yes. Colorado trade names do not have to be unique. Open each Statement of Trade Name and compare the registrant, address, dates and associated business record.
Is the Colorado registered agent the business owner?
Not necessarily. The agent receives legal and state documents. An owner can serve, but an attorney or professional registered-agent company may also hold the role.
How do I get a Colorado Certificate of Good Standing?
Search and confirm the correct entity, then select the certificate option from the Summary page or official certificate search. The online certificate is free when the entity qualifies.
Does an empty Colorado name search guarantee availability?
No. Search close variations, designators, trade names and trademarks. Final filing acceptance depends on Colorado’s distinguishability rules, and state acceptance does not create federal trademark rights.
Freshness note: search interfaces, fees and filing requirements can change. The instructions and amounts in this guide were checked against Colorado government sources on July 23, 2026. Confirm the final status, filing option and payment amount on the official page before submitting.
